Classic Inca Trail sold out? Fear not! The Huchuy Qosqo + Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
is the perfect Alternative Inca Trail. Hike through remote Andean mountains near Cusco,
follow ancient Inca paths into the Sacred Valley, then walk the Short Inca Trail to
arrive twice at Machu Picchu—both times through the Sun Gate (Intipunku).
This 4-day adventure combines a high-Andes trek to Huchuy Qosqo with the
last section of the Classic Inca Trail. You’ll enjoy panoramic views of Cusco, visit
traditional communities, walk with llamas and alpacas, and explore sites like Huchuy
Qosqo, Ollantaytambo, Wiñay Wayna, and Machu Picchu—on the same route used by the last
Inca king Manco Inca as he moved his rebel forces from Cusco to Vilcabamba in the 16th
century.
Depart from your hotel in Cusco at 07:00 and drive about 20 minutes to
Tambomachay, the starting point of your trek. Begin hiking gradually
uphill across vast grasslands, passing herds of llamas and alpacas, high Andean lakes,
and birdlife along the way.
After ~4 hours, arrive at Koriccocha Lake (3,700 m / 12,130 ft) for a
scenic lunch. In the afternoon, continue hiking toward Qenqo Village
(3,800 m / 12,467 ft), a small rural community where people live from agriculture and
livestock. Here you’ll camp with comfortable equipment and enjoy dinner under the
stars.
Enjoy sunrise over the local village with a hot cup of coffee or tea. After breakfast,
begin a gradual ascent toward the highest point of the day, with spectacular views over
the Sacred Valley. Then descend for about 2 hours to
Huchuy Qosqo (3,600 m / ~11,800 ft), a stunning ancient Inca city
perched on a ridge above the valley.
Hike through small canyons, streams, and terraces before reaching the site. Explore
Huchuy Qosqo with your guide, then descend about 1.5 hours into the Sacred Valley to
the village of Lamay for lunch. In the afternoon, travel by private
van along the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo, where you’ll check into
a 3-star hotel.
Wake early, have breakfast at your hotel, and board one of the first trains from
Ollantaytambo to Km 104 (Chachabamba), the starting
point of the Short Inca Trail. After the checkpoint, begin a ~7-hour
hike through cloud forest and terraces, visiting key sites such as
Chachabamba, Wiñay Wayna, and the
Sun Gate.
The Short Inca Trail lets you enjoy the most important viewpoints and ruins of the last
section of the Classic Inca Trail. Time your arrival to reach Machu Picchu
after 16:00, when the site is almost empty and the light is magical.
After enjoying your first views of Machu Picchu, take the bus down to
Aguas Calientes, check into your hotel, have dinner in a local
restaurant, and rest for the big day tomorrow.
On your final day, wake early in Aguas Calientes, have breakfast at your hotel, and
take one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu. If the weather
cooperates, you’ll witness a spectacular sunrise over the citadel.
Your guided tour (2–3 hours) begins with the option to visit the
Inca Bridge or enjoy time at the upper terraces. Then your guide will
show you the most important parts of Machu Picchu: terraces, urban areas, temples, and
palaces, while sharing its history, engineering, and legends.
After the tour, you’ll have free time to explore on your own or, if you reserved
tickets, climb
Huayna Picchu or
Machu Picchu Montaña. When you’re finished, take the bus back to Aguas Calientes for
lunch (not included), then board the panoramic train and connect with
a private van back to Cusco. Arrival at your hotel is around 19:30.
