Every year on June 24th, the Inti Raymi festival is celebrated here to worship the Sun.

Places We Visit During the Cusco City Tour

Plaza de Armas. The center of Cusco, even before the Spanish invasion in 1533. Also known as Huacaypata, it is surrounded by shops and restaurants, many built over Inca foundations. This square is full of history, as it was the stage for many events that changed our history.

Cathedral. Located in the heart of Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, built over an Inca palace and designed in Gothic-Renaissance and Baroque styles (1559–1654). Cusco’s Cathedral is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It took over 100 years to build, with stones mainly carried from Sacsayhuaman. Today it houses important colonial art, including the famous “Last Supper” by Quechua artist Marcos Zapata.

12-Angled Stone Street. Also known as Hatunrumiyoc Street, here you will find the famous twelve-angled stone, a diorite rock set into a wall of the Archbishop’s Palace. It is one of the best examples of Inca stonework and masonry.

Loreto Street. Also called Intikijllu (the Street of the Sun), this narrow street leading from the Plaza de Armas is a masterpiece of Inca masonry, with long original walls still intact.

Koricancha (The Golden Temple).
This was the most important religious site of the Inca Empire, considered the center of the world. Its original name was Intikancha, but after the arrival of the Spanish it was renamed Koricancha (Golden Temple) because of the amount of gold found inside. The Santo Domingo Church was built over this sacred site, but today you can still see impressive Inca walls and temples inside.

Sacsayhuaman. Located just 15 minutes from Cusco, Sacsayhuaman is famous for its enormous zigzagging limestone walls, towers, shrines, storehouses, and the esplanade where the Inti Raymi festival is held. From here you can enjoy some of the best views of Cusco.

Qenqo, Tambomachay, and Puka Pukara. These are additional archaeological sites on the outskirts of Cusco that you will visit as part of the tour, each with its own history and purpose within the Inca landscape.
