Visit Peru’s most spectacular and unique Inca archaeological sites, starting in Chinchero, Moray, Maras, Salineras, and Ollantaytambo, and finally arriving at Machu Picchu in the early hours to see the sunrise.
Cusco visitors shouldn’t miss the Chinchero, Maras, Moray, Salineras, Ollantaytambo, and Machu Picchu Tour. On the first day, you will explore Chinchero and its handicraft market, the circular terraces of Moray, the town of Maras, the Salineras salt pans, and Ollantaytambo. The second day is dedicated to touring Machu Picchu before boarding the panoramic train and bus back to Cusco.
At 8:00 am, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and transport you to Chinchero to see the archaeological site, the magnificent colonial church, and the handicraft market, where you will find an incredible selection of woven fabrics made by indigenous weavers.
Next, you will take a one-hour journey to Moray, where you will see the circular agricultural terraces. You will then visit the picturesque town of Maras and the Salineras of Maras, where salt has been extracted since Inca times.
Lunch is served buffet-style in a local restaurant in Urubamba, using local ingredients. After lunch, you will take a 1-hour journey to Ollantaytambo to explore the archaeological site and the living Inca town.
In the evening, you will have dinner at a local restaurant, travel to Aguas Calientes by train, and spend the night in a 3-star hotel.
You will begin the day with an early breakfast at the hotel and then board one of the first buses to Machu Picchu. Once inside the citadel, you will start a guided tour of the most important areas (temples, palaces, terraces, plazas). The guided tour lasts around 3 hours, after which you will have free time to explore the site on your own.
After exploring Machu Picchu, you will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, have lunch (not included), and then board the panoramic train and bus back to Cusco. You will arrive at your hotel at about 7:30 pm.
Only 45 minutes from Cusco, Chinchero is famous for its local market, historic church, and agricultural terraces. Most inhabitants are Quechua descendants dedicated to agriculture and weaving. Chinchero produces some of the finest textiles in the region, using Andean designs, natural dyes, and ancient weaving techniques.
This breathtaking site, situated at about 3,500 meters (11,500 ft), is made up of several gigantic circular terraces resembling Roman amphitheaters, each with its own irrigation system. Although their exact function is uncertain, it is believed that Moray served as an agricultural laboratory, allowing the Incas to experiment with and adapt crops to different microclimates thanks to the temperature variation between terraces.
On a steep mountain slope, the Salineras have been worked since pre-Inca times. The inhabitants of Maras gather salt from nearly 3,000 ponds using the same techniques as their ancestors. It takes about a month to fill the ponds daily with salty water and allow it to evaporate until the salt reaches about 10 cm in thickness, when it is harvested and distributed to local markets.
Ollantaytambo is located 94 km from Cusco, surrounded by towering mountains, narrow cobblestone streets, and impressive Inca ruins. It is the only citadel that has been continuously inhabited since Inca times (14th century), which is why it is known as the “last living Inca city.” During the Spanish conquest, it served as a stronghold in the
Battle of Ollantaytambo.
