Pick-up is at 4:30 am from your hotel in Cusco and you drive for about 3 hours to Soraypampa (3,800 m / 12,467 ft), where your trekking chef will prepare a delicious breakfast with fresh local products. After breakfast, you hike for around 4 hours to Humantay Lake, where you can explore the surroundings of the beautiful turquoise lake.
Lunch is served at the base of Humantay Mountain, with incredible views of the Andes. In the afternoon, you hike for about 2 hours to the basecamp just below Salkantay Mountain (3,900 m / 12,795 ft). Upon arrival, your comfortable tents will already be set up—you only need to relax, grab a drink, and enjoy the views.
Wake up in your tent with a beautiful mountain view, enjoy a hot cup of coffee or coca tea, and get ready for the most challenging day of the Salkantay Tour. After breakfast, you start a steep ascent to the highest point of the trek, the Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft). At the pass, you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the snow-capped peaks while an Andean shaman performs a traditional offering to Pachamama (Mother Earth).
Lunch is served in Wayrajmachay village, about 2 hours downhill from the pass. In the afternoon, you continue descending for about 3 hours to the second campsite in Collpapampa (2,800 m / 9,186 ft), located in the cloud forest. Here you camp with luxury equipment, enjoy warmer weather, soothing massages, hot showers, and a well-deserved dinner.
After breakfast in the village, you start hiking for about 3 hours through lush cloud forest with green vegetation, bridges, waterfalls, granadilla and banana plantations until you reach Lucmabamba, where lunch is served.
Lunch is a special Pachamanca hot stone barbecue, and you will participate in the preparation of this Andean delicacy. After lunch, visit an organic coffee farm to prepare your own cup of coffee and learn about the harvesting and roasting process. Then, hike for about 3 hours along an ancient Inca Trail to the Llaqtapata Inca site, where you’ll have your first glimpse of Machu Picchu from a distance. Spend the night in a rustic lodge located right in front of Machu Picchu.
Llaqtapata is located on a mountain directly facing Machu Picchu; if the weather allows, you can enjoy an amazing sunset and sunrise over the citadel. After your last breakfast with the trekking team, begin the final 5-hour hike to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo).
Along the way, you will visit the sundial at Hidroeléctrica, the Mandor Botanical Gardens, and hike around Machu Picchu Mountain. Mandor is a place full of history; Hiram Bingham III visited here in 1911 before discovering Machu Picchu. Tonight, you stay in a 4-star hotel in Aguas Calientes.
After breakfast at your hotel, take one of the early buses up to Machu Picchu to watch the sunrise. The guided tour of Machu Picchu takes around 3–4 hours.
Your guide will first take you on an extra short hike to the Sun Gate or the Inca Bridge. You will then visit the most important sectors of Machu Picchu—temples, palaces, terraces—and have free time to explore further or hike up to
Huayna Picchu or
Montaña Machu Picchu (if included in your booking).
After finishing the Machu Picchu tour, enjoy lunch at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. In the afternoon, board the exclusive Vistadome panoramic train back to Cusco.
